Minecraft: How to Make a Nether Portal (Easy Guide)

by | Minecraft | 0 comments

One of my favorite activities in Minecraft is exploring the Nether. In Survival Mode you can get tons of loot. There are even materials to make the strongest Netherite Armor! The Nether is a large world with various biomes, fortresses, & tons of unique mobs.

Creating a Nether Portal isn’t rocket science but buckle up to learn how to make a Nether Portal easy and fast. If this Minecraft Nether Portal Instruction Guide helped you, let us know how you feel and comment below!

Materials for Nether Portal

Method #1.
10 Obsidian Blocks
Flint and Steel

Method #2.
10 Obsidian Blocks
Fire Charge

How do you get these Materials?

Obsidian – To get Obsidian, you will have to Mine until you find lava. When you find lava pour water onto the lava and the lava will turn into Obsidian. After, you can mine the Obsidian using a Diamond Pickaxe.

Flint and Steel – To craft flint and steel, you need Flint and an Iron Ingot. Both of these materials can be mined. Flint is mined from Gravel and Iron is mined from Iron Blocks.

Fire Charge – To get fire charge you’ll need, Blaze Powder, Coal, & Gunpowder. Blaze Powder comes from the Blaze Mob, Coal comes from Coal Blocks, Gunpowder comes from defeating creepers.

Nether Portal Frame

If you got your materials, it is a great time to start building the Nether Portal’s Outline. The dimensions of the smallest Nether Portal you can jump into are 4×5 but you can make your Nether Portal up to 23×23.

Lighting the Nether Portal

Use a Flint and Steel or Fire Charge to light the portal. Other methods do work but they are much harder and not worth the struggle. The Inside of the Portal should be a mysterious purple color.

Leaving the Nether

To leave the Nether you will have to once again go through a Nether Portal. You can simply go through the same Nether Portal (from where you spawned) to get back.

On the other hand, getting lost makes the situation a bit more tricky. You will have to create another Nether Portal. If you lack the materials to make another Nether Portal, something I recommend is trading with Piglins in the Nether.

To trade with Piglins, you’ll need gold ingots. Luckily it’s really easy to mine gold in the Nether. Once you’ve gotten your Gold Ingots throw them at Piglins. They will pick up the gold and throw something back in return. Do this until you get Obsidian and Fire Charge. Now, build a Nether Portal as you’d normally do. If you cannot manage to get fire charge, a cool trick would be to lure a Ghast into throwing a fire ball at your “Nether Portal Frame”. Boom, your portal will be lit.

Stylizing your Nether Portal

Many of us would agree that the Nether Portal is quite beautiful. To really highlight your Nether Portal, something you can do is stylize it. Here is how we styled our Nether Portal!

Changing Location of your Nether Portal

When creating your Nether Portal, keep in mind that every 1 block moved in the Nether, is 8 Blocks you are moving in the Overworld. You will NOT be spawned at the same coordinates in the Overworld as in the Nether because everything on the horizontal plain is scaled by 8. The vertical plain remains the same, so do not worry about that.

To put this in perspective, if you make a Nether Portal at (400,800) in the Overworld, you will spawn at the coordinates (50,100) in the Nether. During your gameplay you will find this information handy, especially if you get lost.
