Minecraft Turtles: Everything You Need To Know!

by | Minecraft | 0 comments

Turtles are a Passive Mob in Minecraft. Many players do not know this, but turtles are pretty useful and can even be used for equipment. Baby Turtles are one of the smallest Mobs in Minecraft but Adult Turtles are quite huge.

How to Find Turtles in Minecraft?

To search for Turtles, it is recommended to look near the shores of an Ocean. Note that these shores must be sandy shores because turtles won’t spawn on stone shores or at cold & snowy biomes. Just like in real life, the turtles will be located at relatively warm areas.

You will typically find these turtles in groups of 3-5. Adult Turtles will be easy to see from far away because they are quite large.

Baby Turtles have a 10% chance of spawn but they even more hard to find considering how small baby turtles are.

For Minecraft Java Edition: Turtles need an 8+ Light Level to Spawn.

For Minecraft Bedrock Edition: Turtles need a 7+ Light Level to Spawn.

How to Tame Minecraft Turtles

Taming Stray Turtles is simply something you cannot do in Minecraft.

Although you won’t be able to Tame Turtles you can still lure Turtles by feeding them Seagrass and having Seagrass equipped in your hand.

You can find Seagrass in an Underwater Biome.

How to Breed Minecraft Turtles?

To Breed Turtles you will need, 2 Adult Turtles & Seagrass.

First, Bring the Turtles into an enclosed space.

Then, feed the turtles Seagrass until they both have red hearts around them.

After, the Adult Turtles will automatically mate and lay a turtle egg.

Keep this turtle egg protected and the egg will hatch on its own to let out a tiny baby turtle.

How long does it take for a Minecraft Turtle Egg to Hatch?

Typically, turtle eggs hatch after 4-5 days but it varies. Also, Turtle Eggs only hatch in the Night Time. It’s especially important to keep your turtle egg protected because the eggs do in fact attract Zombie Mobs.

When your Turtle Eggs hatch, you are able to feed the baby turtles Seagrass if you want them to grow into adults faster.

How to relocate a Turtle Egg in Minecraft?

If you are looking to move the location of your turtle egg, you’ll first need a silk touch pickaxe. With this pickaxe, you can pick up the turtle egg and place it in your inventory without the egg breaking.

After, you can place the Turtle Egg wherever you’d like.

What Happens when you Kill a Turtle in Minecraft?

When a Turtle Dies it will drop:

  1. Between 0-2 Seagrass. If you kill a Turtle with a Looting III Enchantment there is a chance of 0-5 Seagrass being dropped instead.
  2. Between 1-3 Experience if the Turtle has been slayed by a player.
  3. A Bowl if the Turtle was killed by Lightning. This is a rare occurence.

Adult Turtles have 30 HP (Health Points).

Minecraft Turtle Behavior

Turtles naturally move freely on land and in water. Some Mobs will take damage in certain enviroments, but not Turtles. Even though Turtles can be on both land and water, Turtles move around much faster when they are in water. Turtles can be classified as an Aquatic Mob because they do not drown in water.

Turtles can be killed by a singular strike of Lightning. When they are attacked in other ways, they will flee until dead.

To add on, Turtles can strangely be moved around by Minecarts & Boats.

If you are planning to take care of a Turtle keep in mind that they feel safer if they are near a water source. Turtles love to roam around the water and swim in circles most of the time.

Additional Information on Turtle Eggs & Baby Turtles

Turtle Eggs only hatch on Sand so make sure that your Turtle Egg is placed on a Sand Block (assuming you want to hatch the egg). Otherwise, Turtle Eggs are placable on all Blocks but can’t be hatched on anything but Sand.

The Minecraft Turtle Eggs are very fragile. If they are stepped on, they could easily break. Adult Turtles cannot break Turtle Eggs though.

You’ll know if a Turtle Egg is close to Hatching when you see cracks in the Egg.

During the night, Eggs grow much faster than any other time.

Baby Turtles will suffocate if they walk on Soul Sand just like Silverfish & Endermites.
